Hello and Dem VP Choice

As a newcomer to this site I thought I would drop in and say hello and ask a question of the group here (hopefully Im not covering old ground).

I am curious what everyone thinks of the possible VP candidates available to the dems and if you would have the other contender for the dem nomination to your prefered candidate as the VP for your candidate.

So if Hillary is your choice would you have Obama as your VP (or not) and vice versa?

I guess as a lurker here for a long time and someone who is not into the vitriol I will put my bias (or better put preference) out there from the get go.  I am an Obama supporter.  Originally Richardson, then uncommitted then Obama.

And to answer my own question, I would have Hillary as Obama's VP.

Obama supporter here (2.00 / 2)

Under normal circumstances I would not want him to ask Hillary to be the VP, but I think whichever of them gets the nod they have to give the VP slot to the other in the interest of party unity.

There are a lot of people pissed off at each other, this is the best way to heal the divide and take down McCain.  Also, the VP will be best positioned to take over eight years down the road which can be a nice consolation prize.

plus (none / 0)

just imagine George "Macaca" Allen's face, when we have a half black man and a woman on the same ticket.

That memory alone is worth making it happen.

A "Maverick"/"Macaca" ticket (none / 0)

It has a nice ring to it.

McCain's occupation plan will achieve victory when it bestows liberty to the freedom loving people of Iraq and their freedom loving oil.

Re: Obama supporter here (none / 0)

Yeah...put those who threaten "I'll Vote McCain!" in a position where they have to hurt their chosen candidate in the process, and it'll probably make unifying this party a LOT easier.

And the effect of a VP choice isn't really borne out in reality as much as the media would like us to think.  One study found that there was a 0.3% home-state advantage in the VP nominee's state.  For most states, that wouldn't mean squat.  I suppose if Gephardt were still popular in Missouri it might matter, or maybe it'd be enough to help McCain hold Florida, if he chooses Crist, but for the most part it's pretty insignificant.

Given that, the potential defection of either Obama's independents or Hillary's women and/or blue collar whites FAR outweighs any advantage to be gained by a "strategic" VP choice.

No way. No how. No McCain.

The way I look at it...  Clinton and Obama fight so much that they're practically married.

Hello (2.00 / 1)

welcome to Hell

"I am an Obama supporter." Four words you'll regret in about 10 minutes... I'm one as well, well I voted for him, and now am regretting that since he picked UNC to win the NCAA Basketball Tourney - I know it sounds silly, but wait until you hear what some folks here say while they are being serious.

Ive lurked here a while (2.00 / 1)

So I know what you are saying, but I believe the tide is turning and respectful disagreement could be welcomed (and that applies to all echo chambers equally).

I am appalled by some of the over the top vitriol (and what appears to be delusion) but I believe most of the people here would be OK with good honest discussion.

Plus echo chambers are the most dangerous thing for our party right now.  It just hardens the camps and makes reconciliation impossible.

So I think of it as an olive branch gesture (no matter the outcome).  I know Im not going to change many minds but I can remind us we are all in this for the same fight.

Re: Hello and Dem VP Choice (2.00 / 1)

It has been my belief that the most obvious Vice Presidential choice for Hillary Clinton would be Evan Bayh of Indiana. It moderates the ticket that is historically winnable. I was very happy when he endorsed her for President. As for Obama, it is a little tough. He will need a Governor, preferably from the south such as Mike Easley, or Phil Bredesen or someone from the West like Janet Napolitano or the midwest like Kathleen Sebelius. If John Edwards was in the race, I think Sebelius would have been his choice.

As this point, I don't want Obama on a Clinton headed ticket, nor do I want Clinton on an Obama headed ticket.

If somehow Clinton is the nominee...Obama is likely the only one who could stop a Clinton-Obama ticket

Clinton - Edwards (none / 0)

makes the most snse to me.. except that I doubt if he would run.

In other words, its a sorry situation.

I just don't know what you Obama folks see in him anymore. Maybe three or four months ago, but not now.

I think that giving Obama the vice presidency would be a mistake given the nature of his campaign.

Re: Hello and Dem VP Choice (none / 0)

If Obama shows enough class to actually respect the will of half the party and not only allows but embraces Hillary as his running mate he may win back my vote after all. We all saw both Clintons publically stating they are open to Obama as VP. Hillary would take Veep, I firmly believe she would because becoming the first female Vice President would be a big step as well in terms of history and frankly look at McCain she could still run for President again as an incumbent VP in 8 years she isn't THAT old and women live longer anyway

by rossinatl on Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 01:50:53 AM EST

By what logic would anyone consider that? (none / 0)

its a backwards situation.
